Making Maths count

Girls in Pre-Prep were making Maths count on Thursday when they took part in the NSPCC’s “Number Day”, a nationwide fundraising event for schools.

The NSPCC is the the leading children's charity fighting to end child abuse in the UK. The charity helps children who have been abused to rebuild their lives, protects those at risk, and aims to find the best ways of preventing abuse from ever happening.

Girls in Reception to Year 2 raised money by bringing in a donation so that they could come to school wearing mufti displaying their favourite number. They then enjoyed a whole day of Maths themed activities both inside and outside of the classroom:

• Reception played musical numbers – identifying numbers in rhyme.
• Year 1 conducted a search for 2D shapes, recording their findings on the iPADs. They also used their knowledge of traditional tales to solve Mathematical word problems.
• Year 2 used their compass skills to find their way to a hidden shape. They also explored the properties of 3D shapes by creating models using nets.
• There were interactive games of “Who wants to be a Mathionaire”, testing the girls’ general Maths knowledge as they tried to make a virtual million.
• Girls also tried their hand at code breaking to solve a mystery puzzle.

Head of EYFS and KS1, Miss Holloway, said “The NSPCC’s Number Day was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to make a difference in other children’s lives through Mathematics. By immersing themselves in a range of Mathematical activities, the girls were able to apply their established skills and knowledge to new challenges, adding further depth to their understanding of different concepts.”
