Events and Trips Year 7

On Thursday, Year 7 Form Captains visited the depot of the One Can Trust in High Wycombe. Since 2011, One Can Trust has operated a food bank based in High Wycombe, serving the town and South Buckinghamshire.

The Year 7 Form Captains write:

“We had been active in collecting many items for One Can Trust in the run to Christmas and expressed interest in finding out 'what happens next?' Mrs Collins, our Head of Year 7, got in touch with a member of the charity who invited us along to their depot to find out more.

Our visit started in the depot where we watched a video on the need for food banks. We were shocked by some of the statistics and were keen to find out more about the work of the charity. We went into the warehouse where we saw large supplies of food - pasta, rice and cereals in particular. We were given information about where the food comes from and goes to – it was very impressive to see the efficient packing system with various boxes containing an array of foodstuffs and basic toiletry items, essential for individuals and families in need.

We were told that the charity distributes well over 2000 parcels a year, and that numbers are increasing; however, so too are donations. The summer is a low point though as people tend to be away and not consider the food banks so much, yet the need is just as great.

Finally we watched another video – this one included comments from grateful recipients. One Can Trust will support anyone referred to them and many recipients only need one or two parcels to help them during a tough time but some need longer term help. It was very emotional listening to what they had to say.

It was a terrific, and very humbling, opportunity to see how a charity operates. We are so glad that throughout this year, simply by donating a few cans and other foodstuffs, we have contributed to making a real difference to the lives of many people in our local area.”
