Girls at Pipers took part in the “Restart a Heart Day” on Monday. Organised by the Resuscitation Council UK, in partnership with the British Heart Foundation, British Red Cross, St John Ambulance and all of UK ambulance services this annual day of action aims to train as many young people as possible in life saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills on a single day.

We were delighted to welcome members of the Ambulance and Fire Services, along with a member of the air force to school to teach basic CPR skills and about tools to use when an individual is not breathing. The presentation started with a video about the process of CPR, following which the Ambulance Service demonstrated how to use a defibrillator to shock a heart or restart it - these are sited in many places in the local area and we also have defibrillators in school.

The girls then had the opportunity to try out CPR for themselves using Resusci Annie manikins. It was a hugely beneficial session for the girls and really helped them to understand how taking action quickly can save the life of someone who goes into cardiac arrest.
