On Monday evening we were delighted to welcome members of the Lower Sixth and their parents to “Beyond Pipers 2018”. The aim of the event was to inform our Year 12 students about the huge range of options available to them for further study when they leave Pipers Corner after completing their A Levels.

Exhibiting at the evening were representatives from a selection of Higher Education institutions, as well as “A Star Future” (promoting International Study) and GAP360 (to talk about GAP Years). There were opportunities for attendees to visit the organisations’ stands before and after the main presentations so the students could ask individual questions and collect information materials

The event began with an outline of the University admissions process, including advice on the entire application process. There was then a panel question and answer session with representatives from Loughborough University, The University of Surrey, The University of Buckingham and A Star Future Ltd (International Study).

Some of the questions asked included:

  • Is University worthwhile?
  • University courses vary in length from a standard 3 year course, to degrees with years in industry, and in some cases, shorter degrees. Could you highlight any benefits to those offered by your university?
  • What advice would you give about choosing a course and a university?
  • Briefly, what is your admissions process and criteria – and what factors do you put the greatest emphasis on?
  • Why would you suggest that British students go abroad considering that we have some of the best universities in the world in this country? (directed to A Star Future)
  • What top tip would you give applicants?

Head of Careers, Mrs Bevan said, “It was a very interesting evening for the students and we hope that it has provided them with a good starting point for further research as they start planning for life after school. We are most grateful to the various organisations for joining us and sharing their experience.”
