Whole School Environment

On Monday 21 November, we were invited to the Houses of Parliament to receive two celebrated international Green Apple Awards. Little did we know, we would be presented with a special surprise.

Following a Green Apple application put together by the students earlier this year detailing the environmental efforts made within the School, The Green Organisation presented Pipers with Gold awards in two sectors, Education and Sustainability. This meant that we have become the first Independent School to win a Green Apple Award and the first School ever to win two awards in the same year.

Little did our representatives know that the Green Organisation were so impressed by the application put forward, that they awarded us the Green World Environmental Ambassador award, which will be presented at a special ceremony next Spring.

This means the School has won not only two, but three environmental awards; the first School in the history of the Green Apple Awards to do so.

When we applied, we hoped to win one award, but to win two and for both of them to be gold was a fantastic surprise and proves that the whole school approach at Pipers to the environment and sustainability is special and is working. To then be given the Ambassadors Award by the Green Organisation is a credit to the whole Pipers Corner community. It is hard to put into words what it means.

- Environmentalist-in-Residence,  Phil Williams

Pipers competed with thousands of applications from businesses, charities and organisations around the world, with countries such as New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Portugal, Poland, Turkey, Qatar, Brazil, USA and Canada flying in company representatives and government officials to attend.

Previous winners of these prestigious awards have included Balfour Beatty, Kier Construction and Rolls Royce.

The all-school environmental programme entitled ‘Creating tomorrow, today’ will also be featured in detail in The Green Book, a publication circulated globally.

In recognition of this incredible achievement, We have been invited to be the first School to represent the UK not just in education, but across the whole sector including Business, Industry and Governments at the Green World Awards 2023 in Florida, USA.

I am thrilled that the students' commitment to sustainability has been rewarded in such a significant way. I am proud of the work they are doing, as protecting our planet is at the heart of a Pipers' education.
