Environment Whole School

It's been a fast-paced two months since I stepped into the role of Environmentalist in Residence here at Pipers. The experience has been incredibly rewarding as I've had the chance to engage with our students, listening first-hand to their thoughts and concerns about environmental issues.

Recognising the immense value in our students' opinions, I took a step towards making it easier for everyone to share their suggestions. One of the key changes was transforming the School's HOPE (Helping Others Protect the Environment) board by adding a whiteboard. This simple addition encouraged students to voice their desires for a greener School environment. Suggestions ranged from organising litter picks to advocating for more recycling bins and reducing paper waste. These insights will guide our HOPE group's mission, aiming to transform our school from the inside out.

This year, our initiatives have been geared toward actionable steps. One such initiative was during Recycling Week 2023. The HOPE group spearheaded an Autumn 'clear out' of wardrobes and a Fashion Exchange event, emphasising that clothes are often overlooked recyclable objects. The event saw a remarkable turnout, with over 60% of donating students swapping tokens for new environmentally friendly wardrobe additions. Witnessing the community's enthusiastic support was truly heartening.

The upcoming Christmas Fair this Saturday will host another Fashion Exchange, this time with contributions from Pre-Prep and Prep and I am anticipating more smiles as these items find new owners.

Looking ahead, our agenda is packed with support for crucial environmental events throughout the school year. Earth Day next April is on our radar, along with the launch of COP28 where I'll be encouraging students to actively engage and question the initiatives aimed at our planet's wellbeing.

At Pipers, the future is undoubtedly green.
