As part of our Sixth Form Enrichment Programme, we were delighted to welcome Lindsay van Dijk, the lead Chaplain for Bucks NHS Trust. Lindsay was the first humanist to head a chaplaincy and pastoral support team in the NHS.

Her insightful talk gave an indepth insight into Humanism - the belief  that this life is the only life we have, that the universe is a natural phenomenon with no supernatural side, and that we can live ethical and fulfilling lives on the basis of reason and humanity. Girls discovered that Humanism is also a moral and political commitment. Humanists pursue a humane society that is based on human dignity.

Her appointment at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust was hailed by campaigners as a positive step for inclusivity for the pastoral needs of patients who are not necessarily religious. The girls had a great discussion with Lindsay and asked some really fascinating questions surrounding the meaning of life, if we can be good without God and what it means to not believe in a God but still have beliefs.

The group discussed other issues surrounding Lindsay’s work and the difficulties she has faced with her role of a ‘Chaplain’ despite not having a religious belief. It was an insightful session in which the girls, whether or not they are studying Religious Studies, were able to consider life from a different perspective.
