Events and Trips Pre-Prep and Prep

At the beginning of October, Lower Sixth girls travelled to Snowdonia National Park in Wales as part of their A Level Geography studies.  The purpose of the trip was to enhance the girls’ understanding of their “changing places” unit in which they are required to understand the differences between places in terms of perception and experience.

On arrival the girls began their fieldwork in Nant Ffrancon valley and Cwm Idwal, where they observed glacial features such as truncated spurs and exposed till on the river banks. The following day the girls visited Llandudno to complete their urban change fieldwork, concentrating on the regeneration within the town. They took note of land use, the number of pedestrians, the ratio of coffee houses to fast food outlets and carried out a survey of the local population.  To further their understanding of the area, and as a comparison, the girls also visited Conwy and Betws-y-coed where they looked at the importance of tourism within north Wales.  As a comparative study, the girls are planning to carry out the same tasks as they did in Llandudno, in Great Missenden.

Head of Geography, Mrs Collins, said “The trip was a great success and the girls gained a lot in terms of teamwork and application of their work covered in lessons.  Fieldwork is an essential aspect of teaching and learning in Geography and to be able to work outside the classroom is a rich and enjoyable opportunity for the girls.”
