We had a fantastic time celebrating the European Day of Languages on Wednesday. The day began with a delicious continental breakfast in the Café, where girls and staff enjoyed a selection of pastries, coffee, tea and juice. It was great to see so many flags and hearing the girls greet each other in different languages!

At lunchtime we welcomed a Bavarian Band in their lederhosen to the Dining Hall to entertain us whilst we ate. Our school caterers, Holroyd Howe put on a special European lunch including Chicken Cacciatore (Italian), Vegetable Paella (Spanish) and Pommes Lyonnaise (French).

Throughout that day there were cross-curricular activities taking place in the classroom as Departments included languages in their work. A treasure hunt for girls in Year 7 and 8 also took place at lunchtime which required the girls to use their language skills to translate clues in order to create an anagram which gave them the winning word and some prizes!

European Day of Languages is an initiative devised by the Council of Europe which began in 2001 and aims to further the Council’s conviction that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our continent. Europe is rich in languages - there are over 200 European languages and many more spoken by citizens whose family origin is from other continents.

At Pipers it was a lovely opportunity for everyone to have a go at speaking some different languages, learn something new, and have some fun along the way!
