Pre-Prep and Sixth Form students enjoyed some ‘Egg-cellent’ science fun on the last day of term. Working collaboratively, they made bath bombs using baking soda, essential oils and food colouring and the older students helped the younger students to package them to take home as an Easter gift for their loved ones.

Dr Morton and Ms Hanley then showcased some Egg-citing demonstrations where they tested the strength of eggshells by laying books on top of them to see how many they could withstand without cracking.  The guesses around the room from Pre-Prep ranged from 1 to 100, and it’s safe to say the answer was ‘somewhere in the middle’.

A magic wand was required next as they suggested that it was possible for a hard boiled egg to pass through the neck of a conical flask that was narrower than the egg itself. And no, they weren’t yolking!! By lighting paper and letting the smoke fill the flask, the egg eventually popped through the neck of the flask, the students were amazed and intrigued by the trick and learned about the concepts of pressure and gas.

The hands-on learning in this fun session really enhanced the children’s appreciation of science and they all made some wonderfully insightful observations.  It also allowed the Sixth Form students to develop their leadership skills and share their knowledge with the younger children.
