A small, select group of students travelled to Moira House Girls School in Eastbourne, to attend the annual GSA ‘Girls Go Gold’ Conference. As the Conference was held in conjunction with the University of Brighton, it offered the girls the opportunity of attending some lectures and practical sessions whilst also utilising some of the university’s outstanding sporting and teaching facilities.

The day was aimed at providing aspiring young sportswomen with information and advice about subjects such as ‘motivational techniques’ and ‘sport and exercise science and how it can help improve performance’. There was also information about university sports based courses and careers in sport.

The students were able to watch some stunning dance performances by the University of Brighton students, both male and female, take part in a Boxercise class and have a go at a new sport called Kinball. The day brought together students from a wide variety of sports and performance standards, from county level to those already identified for Rio 2016 and they were all encouraged to ask the speakers questions about their own experiences in sport, as well as discuss their own goals and aspirations.

The students were enthralled by the various special guests, keynote speakers and

photo opportunities, with athletes such as Robin Cousins MBE (Ice Skating Olympic Gold Medallist, 1980), Rona Cant (Explorer, author) and Sally Gunnell OBE (400m Hurdles Olympic Gold Medallist, 1992). It was a great day and everyone had an enjoyable and enlightening time
