Year 5 students put their Science and History knowledge to test in the Food Tech room.

In Science, Year 5 students have been working on irreversible and reversible changes. To put this knowledge to the test they made their own butter in Food Tech. They started by discussing how to you can heat and melt butter, as well as cool and refrigerate it, both being reversible. However, if you made a cake with butter, then it is irreversible.

They also linked their task with their work with the Vikings, learning about how they made their own cheese and butter. During lockdown, they made homemade cheese and, today, it was time to try butter. They used whipping cream, putting it into jam jars, putting the lid on and shaking it for about 25-30 minutes until it became more solid and then separated into butter and butter milk. There was lots of teamwork involved, helping each other with the shaking process to help give aching arms a rest. After draining away the butter milk, adding some salt and mixing it in they spread it on slices of bread and tried what they had made. Some students said it was the best butter they had ever had!
