At the beginning of June the girls in Year 5 travelled to the Europa Centre in Essex for a “French experience”. Inside the Centre there was a “mock town” which, on the day, was entirely French speaking and allowed the girls to fully immerse themselves in French language and culture.

As soon as they arrived the girls were divided into groups and taken on a tour. They visited different shops and used fake Euros to pay for artificial products. The shops included: la Boucherie (butchers), la Boulangerie (bakery), le Tabac (newsagent), le Magasin de Vetements (clothes shop) and le Café (coffee shop). Having the chance to practice conversational French in everyday situations really helped the girls to improve their language skills and to think about how to form sentences and converse with each other.

In the afternoon the girls sat down to watch a puppet show, which was completely performed in French. They had to listen carefully to the quick dialogue to understand the storyline and to enjoy the show. This required full concentration and good listening skills. The day ended with a rendition of “Frère Jacques” - a fitting way to end a very French day.
