Year 8 travelled to Hatfield House in Hertfordshire this week in order to further extend their study of Tudor history. The house is the home of the 7th Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury and was the childhood home of Elizabeth I.

The visit began with a guided tour of the house which included seeing the particular spot where the Princess Elizabeth  found out she would be the next queen after the death of her sister Mary I. As the girls moved around the house, history relating to Elizabeth was explained and extended to discussions regarding other aspects of the Tudor period, such as new foods and flowers which were brought from the “New World”.

As they toured through the house the girls “met” Elizabeth, Catherine Parr and Henry VIII. This really brought the period to life for the girls as they asked the historical characters questions about their lives. After their audience with Henry VIII the girls visited Henry’s armourer, who tested their knowledge of Henry VIII’s reign as well as introducing them to the longbow and methods of warfare in the period.

Head of History, Mrs Tinnelly, said “This was a fantastic experience for the girls. Trips to Hatfield House always bring history to life and are a great way for the girls to immerse themselves in Tudor history.”
