Girls in Year 9 headed to the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford on Wednesday for the Girls Mathematical Conference.

The conference provided the group with an opportunity to spend a full day listening to mathematical speakers and engaging in workshops alongside other girls from schools from across the country.  The aim of the event was to encourage girls to continue studying mathematics beyond school.

The girls took part in four sessions which covered problem solving, how maths is used in engineering with a specific focus on bridge design,  how maths can open doors to many different careers and how maths can be used in everyday life.

Mathematics teacher, Miss Reid said “It was a fantastic day and the girls thoroughly enjoyed all four sessions. Attending the conference has certainly helped to increase their desire to study mathematics at A Level and beyond. The girls got really involved and interacted very positively with the lecturers.”
