English Competition

Great excitement was abound in the English department this week as they received a hard copy of the published works of some of our incredibly talented Years 7 and 8 students. ‘Integer’ is an anthology of poetry and prose written by School students from up and down the country who entered and won the Young Writers ‘Integer’ competition.

Entrants were tasked with creating a piece of written work about numbers within a 100 word limit. By exploring the many ways in which numbers shape our lives; from phones and watches to calendars and budgets – numbers are everywhere! The possibilities of creative expression were endless with such a fascinating topic, and it was a joy to see the enthusiasm from the students in their freedom to express this through writing.

It was this spirit of creativity that led Ian Walton, a poet rebelling against the elitism of the poetry world, to found Young Writers in 1991. He vowed to make it possible for poets and writers of all ages to share their work. By entering these competitions our students’ imaginations are ignited and we see improved confidence in their creative writing ability. We are incredibly proud of everyone at the School who entered and for those who subsequently won - seeing their writing brought to life in a real, physical book leads us to have a wonderfully motivated group of aspiring young writers in our midst.
