Year 9 Textiles students enjoyed a trip to Graduate Fashion Week on Thursday 13 June. We caught up with Mrs Maynard, Head of Textiles to tell us a little more about this superb opportunity for the Students.

"The 29 students were excited to arrive, receiving their wristbands and goodie bags to start the day. The first workshop was an interactive Fashion Styling session. The students listened attentively to a stylist with experience in styling celebrities for both red carpet events and magazine shoots. They then had the opportunity to work in groups to style their live model. Although daunting at first, the students enthusiastically embraced the challenge. Their final outfits were photographed by a professional photographer, and we look forward to receiving and the photos soon.

Next, it was off to a Life Drawing workshop. Six models, wearing stunning items from the graduate collections, were positioned around the room, allowing students to move around and draw them. A fashion illustrator led the session, setting tasks and providing tips for fashion drawing.

We then had time for a quick walk around the exhibition. This featured stalls from a wide variety of universities across the country. In addition to displaying garments created by their Fashion Design students, the stalls provided information about various Textiles and Fashion-related degrees. There were also stalls from industry professionals. Students had the chance to ask questions to graduate students and university lecturers, explore degree-level courses, and collect postcards and business cards for their sketchbooks.

After a quick stop for lunch, we watched the graduate fashion show, which featured collections from various universities. For most of our students, this was their first opportunity to watch a professional catwalk show and see how it is done!

Although it was an action-packed and tiring day, everyone involved came away inspired and exhausted."
