Pre-Prep and Prep Clubs & Activities

Girls in the Prep Department have been encouraged to start learning a new skill in computer programming and animation this term. As well as learning about new technology the girls will also gain leadership skills and become better independent learners.

Last week eight girls in Year 5 and 6, along with Sixth Form students took part in a workshop with the Head of Customer Advocacy at Google, Mr Biehler. He taught them how to use the Scratch programme and develop their skills within programming and animation. This included imagination, research and concentration in learning something new. The girls have created some fantastic animations on topics such as “A chicken’s life” and “How to make a fruit smoothie”.

The animations they have created will be entered into The University of Manchester’s Animation14 competition, which is designed for school children to learn about computer science and using computers creatively. Winners will be announced at the Animation Festival and Inspirational Computer Science Day in the summer. Girls will also have their own in-house competition with the winners going to the Google Headquarters in London to see what goes on in the technology and IT world.

Head of Prep, Mr Leith said “This is a great opportunity for the girls to do something different. To learn new skills and bring them to the classroom. They have thoroughly enjoyed everything they have done so far and are looking forward to competing with other schools in the Animation14 competition.”
