Year 2 had a fantastic visit to Watford Synagogue recently. On arrival they were greeted by Rabbi Levine and were encouraged to look around and tell him what they could see as they entered the Synagogue and what they already knew about Judaism. Frankie S showed him her father’s Kippahs that she had brought along with her.

Rabbi Levine then went on to explain all about the various items around the room including the eight Torah scrolls which were behind a curtain. He took one out on to the table to show the girls what it was made of and explained how it was made, including how long it took to write and how much it cost. The girls found out that one scroll took a whole year to make and cost £20,000, a fact which drew great gasps of surprise from the group.

The girls then looked at the prayer books, finding out about how they were read in the opposite way round to the books the girls themselves read in school and at home.

Mrs Clare, Year 2 teacher said “Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the synagogue. It was a very worthwhile and exciting trip for the girls, enabling them to experience first-hand what a synagogue is like and how the Jewish faith is lived. It is an experience that will complement their continuing studies of different religions.”
