Bee-Bots and Floor Mats

Girls in Year 2 have been learning about position of movement, how to follow directions and spatial awareness in their Mathematics lessons recently. To aid this learning the girls have been using a combination of iPADs and Bee-Bot robots.

The girls used the robots on various floor mats which included images of a farm, an island and shapes. A Bee-Bot is a small robot which follows commands which are set by the user to navigate them round a mat.

In order to successfully move the Bee-Bot the girls had to follow certain directions set by Mrs Clare to discover where the Bee-Bot would land. The girls entered certain commands into the Bee-Bot such as forward, back, left and right and how many times it had to move. If they entered the correct command the Bee-Bot would reach the correct destination if not they had to figure out what they did wrong and fix the problem. The girls found this an exciting way to learn and were eager to try more creative ways of directing the robot to the destination.

As part of this learning experience, girls also had the opportunity to use iPAD Minis to move the Bee-Bots around a screen. This not only helped them to learn about directions but also to increase their IT and problem solving skills. The app is designed to test the girls’ abilities and get harder as they progress through the stages, encouraging them to learn as they work and take their skills further.

Mrs Clare, Year 2 teacher said “Using the Bee-Bots is a great way for the girls to expand their directional and movement skills. It brings a level of and competitiveness into lessons as the groups try to beat each other and gain more experience.”
