Girls in Reception travelled to Tring recently to visit the Natural History Museum. The museum houses an array of fascinating animals from large polar bears to tiny spiders collected by Lionel Walter Rothschild.

The Rothschild family gifted the museum, which was a personal collection of Lionel Walter, to the nation in 1937. The museum celebrates the life and work of Lionel Walter Rothschild and his achievements as an important scientist, collector and founder. Animals on display include birds, primates, large carnivores, butterflies and other small insects all contained in glass cages for everyone to see.

The girls were given the opportunity to wander the exhibitions and study all the different types of animals. Their favourite were the lions, tigers and the huge variety of dogs. They also had the opportunity to dress up in costumes such as an “adventurer” and “lion”, an activity which helped to bring the exhibitions and their learning to life.

Reception teacher, Mrs Child said “This was a very worthwhile trip for the girls, providing them with the chance to experience a museum and to learn about the different types of animals in the world. It was the first time many of the girls have been able to see certain types of animals up close and they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
