Girls in Pre-Prep have been making Maths count today, taking part in the NSPCC’s “Number Day”, a nationwide fundraising event for schools.

The girls and staff looked amazing as they arrived in school in mufti displaying their favourite numbers and were clearly ready for a day of marvellous maths. The activities covered a range of mathematical areas including problem solving, number formation, counting, shape identification, measuring, place value and data handling.

Reception had great fun playing musical numbers and identifying numbers in rhyme.

  • Year 1 conducted a search for 2D shapes, recording their findings on the iPads, and also used their knowledge of traditional tales to solve Mathematical word problems
  • Year 2 used their compass skills to find their way to a hidden shape and also explored the properties of 3D shapes by creating models using nets.
  • Year 1 and Year 2 also thoroughly enjoyed playing the interactive game of “Who wants to be a Mathionaire?”, which tested their general Maths knowledge as they tried to make a virtual million.

The NSPCC is the leading children's charity fighting to end child abuse in the UK. The charity helps children who have been abused to rebuild their lives, protects those at risk, and aims to find the best ways of preventing abuse from ever happening. The Number Day event aims to provide an opportunity for children all over the country to make a difference in other children’s lives through Mathematics.

Head of Pre-Prep, Miss Holloway said, “By immersing themselves in a range of Mathematical activities, the girls were able to apply their established skills and knowledge to new challenges, adding further depth to their understanding of different concepts. We were also pleased to use the day as an opportunity to raise money for this very worthy cause.”
