Senior Languages students from Pipers spent four days exploring the marvels of Barcelona during the half-term break. It was a cultural and linguistic experience which enabled the girls to apply the language skills they have acquired in class, whilst at the same time appreciating some of the most impressive cultural delights that the beautiful city has to offer.

On the first day the group explored the Boquería Market, followed by a quick ride on the Barcelona Metro to have dinner in Las Ramblas. On their second day the girls enjoyed a walking tour of the Gothic Quarter before heading to the Picasso Museum, where they tried traditional tapas and watched a Flamenco Show.

Day three began with a visit to Casa Mila and Casa Batllo, two buildings designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí. In the afternoon the group went to Poble Espanyol: a unique combination of architecture, contemporary art, traditional crafts, shops, gastronomy and traditions. Poble Espanyol was built in 1929 for the International Exhibition and resembles an actual village with replicas of 117 real-life scale buildings from different Spanish regions. There was a typical Andalusian quarter, among other things, a section of the Way of Saint James and examples of Romanesque monastic architecture, among others. The girls were also lucky enough to experience a glass making workshop, and amongst other things, learnt about the different festivals celebrated across the regions of Spain.

On the last day, the students visited Gaudi’s house in Park Guell and then la Sagrada Família before heading back to the UK at the end of what was a fantastic visit to a fascinating city.
