This week a group of excited Year 7 girls visited the River and Rowing Museum in Henley for a day of geographical experiments and river exploration, as part of their study of the rivers and flooding unit in Geography.

The girls participated in lots of fact finding missions in the Museum’s gallery and had the opportunity to take part in workshops which tested their knowledge of a range of techniques they have recently learnt in their Geography lessons.

During the workshops the girls set up experiments and used their physical geography skills to find out how rivers erode, transport and deposit their material.  The girls had to investigate why a river floods by examining the impacts of permeable and non-permeable surfaces.  The group then went on a “river walk” along the Thames where they looked at river management.  During the walk the girls took on the role of a character, such as Local Resident, River Thames Management Officer and Wildlife Trust Officer.  With each character they learnt about the different role each person plays in the managing of flooding in both urban and rural areas.

Head of Geography, Mrs Collins said “Visiting the Henley River and Rowing Museum enabled the girls to really see the impact of flooding and understand the workings of a river.  The gained lots of valuable knowledge which will support them back in the classroom.”
