Year 2 enjoyed an interesting visit to Watford Synagogue this week. On arrival they were greeted by Rabbi Levine who encouraged the girls to look around and tell him what they could see as they entered the Synagogue and what they already knew about Judaism.

Rabbi Levine then explained about all the various items around the room including the everlasting lamp which hangs above the Ark in synagogues and represents the Menorah of the Temple in Jerusalem as well symbolising God’s eternal presence.  The girls were shown a selection of prayer books, and they were fascinated to discover how they were read in the opposite way round to the books the girls themselves read in school and at home.

A highlight of the visit was being able to see the eight Torah scrolls.  Rabbi Levine brought one of the scrolls out to show the girls and explained what it was and how it was made.  This included telling the girls how much it cost - an impressive £20,000.

Mrs Clare, Year 2 teacher said “It was a fantastic trip and Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  Rabbi Levine was very impressed about how much the girls already knew about Judaism and it was an experience that will complement their continuing studies of different religions.”
