Pre-Prep and Prep Trips

On Wednesday 25 September girls in Year 5 visited Sulgrave Manor in Oxfordshire, to enrich their study of the Tudors. Sulgrave Manor is the ancestral home of America’s first President, George Washington and the girls took a trip back in time to see what life was like for the family of wealthy wool merchant, Mr Lawrence Washington, who lived in the manor house.

During the morning Year 5 were able to dress up in Tudor clothing and learnt about the origins of some aspects of our language today, including how showing one’s courtesy “curtsey”, and how the old farewell of “God be with you”, became “good-bye”. During their tour of the manor house the girls visited three rooms, the dining hall, the kitchen and the bed chamber, each of which are furnished in an authentic manner from the time..

In the afternoon the girls took part in a play in the Great Hall. Every girl had at least one part and was a great way to bring to life what they had been learning in the classroom.

Head of Prep Department, Mrs Doran said “The girls had a wonderful time at the Manor House. The visit provided an opportunity for cross-curricular links within English and History, something which really helped to make the girls’ learning even more meaningful and fun.”
