The literary world of the Brontës was brought to life for a group of Lower Sixth girls recently as they made the most of a fantastic opportunity to visit Haworth in West Yorkshire. The girls explored the Bronte parsonage and the Yorkshire Moors in order to enrich their understanding and reading of Charlotte Brontë’s novel “Jane Eyre”.

The girls left Pipers early on Saturday morning and, on arrival in Haworth, set off on a nine mile hike across the moors, taking in all the hills and waterfalls Charlotte Brontë knew so well and wrote about in her novels. The girls had the opportunity to reach “Top Withens”, an abandoned farmhouse which is thought to be the inspiration for Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights”.

On Sunday, the girls visited the Brontë Parsonage where they had a fantastic “behind the scenes” tour with Ann Dinsdale, the museum’s curator. Ann gave the girls a fascinating talk about the family and showed the girls a number of artefacts belonging to the family, including Charlotte Brontë’s paintings and handwritten stories.

Mrs Parrett, Head of Sixth and English Teacher said “Stepping into the Parsonage was like stepping back in time and looking out across the moors while we read passages from the Brontë novels was amazing. It was a fantastic experience for the girls and one which will help them enormously as they move forward with their study of “Jane Eyre”.
