This term girls in Year 5 and 6 have been learning about Parliament, how laws are made and the impact they have on society.

On Friday 6 February the girls had a special visit from the Rt Hon David Lidington MP for Aylesbury. He talked to the girls about what his typical day and week was like as a Member of Parliament and how he was inspired to enter politics in 1992 to try to change things which he felt were wrong in society. Mr Lidington also went on to answer some very thoughtful and interesting questions from the girls.

He explained that one of the things he finds most rewarding about being an MP was helping the people of his constituency with problems. When he was asked what he would do if he was Prime Minister he said that he would make electricity companies put their wires underground instead of using pylons.

The girls told Mr Lidington about the new laws they had devised in their lessons, including:

  • Changing the way we vote to a compulsory vote for everyone – Molly B (Year 6)
  • Children should do voluntary work one day a year – Eloise B (Year 5)
  • Schools should provide healthy hot meals for everyone – Josie T (Year 6)

When asked if he could choose a law which he had voted for or implemented as his favourite and most proud of, he replied “I voted for the ban on smoking which I felt very strongly about. The law I was most proud of bringing to Parliament was a private members bill on regulating chiropractic medicine.”

On Monday 23 February a number of girls from Year 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament, to meet Mr Lidington once again and attend a law making workshop. The girls will also have a personal tour of Parliament, led by Nicol Stephen, who has a seat in the House of Lords and is a second cousin of Issy H in Year 6.

Head of Prep, Mr Leith said “It was great to see the girls applying what they have learnt in their lessons when they talked to David Lidington MP. They challenged Mr Lidington with some thought provoking questions and demonstrated a real interest in current affairs.”
