Events and Trips Pre-Prep and Prep

The whole school came together to celebrate Founder’s Day on Friday 30 September. The purpose of the annual event is to celebrate the life and work of the school’s founder, Miss Jessie Cross.

Each year a different decade is chosen for the celebrations and this year marked the 1980s. Staff and girls, from Pre-Prep to Upper Sixth, came to school dressed in 80s fashions.  As well as learning about the history of Pipes Corner and what Jessie Cross set out to achieve, the girls were given the opportunity to experience 80s themed lessons. In Pre-Prep the girls learnt an 80s dance routine to “Girls Just Want to have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper and played Twister. Other activities included making 80s food in Food Technology, English classes explored advertising from the decade and in History lessons the girls looked at 80s politics.

In the afternoon the whole school attended the Founder’s Day Service where the hymns and readings reflected the period. The service culminated with the cutting of a celebration cake by the Head Girl, Bethan T (Upper Sixth) and the youngest girl in the school, Abigail B (Reception).

To add to the celebrations, a charity karaoke competition took place at lunchtime to raise money for Stonewall, a charity founded in the 1980s to combat prejudice against the LGBT community and create acceptance without exception.

Headmistress, Mrs Ness-Gifford said, “It was absolutely wonderful to see both girls and staff embracing the spirit of the 1980s. Founder’s Day is always a really special date in the school’s calendar as we take time to remember the history of Pipers Corner, as well as reflecting on the social history of the country as a whole.”
