Events and Trips Pre-Prep and Prep

Last week girls studying GCSE History thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Old Operating Theatre in London.

The girls are studying Victorian medicine this term and the trip really helped to enhance their knowledge of the topic. The group had a tour of the museum, followed by a walk around Southwark, where they learnt more about the public health problems of living in the district in the Nineteenth Century.

The Old Operating Theatre in London is home to one of the oldest operating theatres in Europe. The girls were able to touch, smell and see many different examples of remedies and medical equipment from the Victorian era. Whilst in the operating theatre, the procedure of the Victorian operation was explained. The girls discovered that with no anaesthetics, antiseptics or blood transfusions available in those times, speed was of the essence for a successful outcome.

Head of History, Mrs Tinnelly said “We had a fantastic trip to the Old Operating theatre and the girls really benefitted from seeing how a procedure might take place in an actual theatre that was used in the Victorian era.”
