Prep Art Day

Every year our Prep department looks forward Prep Art Day, a full day off-timetable dedicated to creativity and colour. Students and staff roll up their sleeves and produce a series of themed artwork, covering many different disciplines such as drawing, painting, ink, tracing and sculpting.

The theme for this year was 'Creation Stories of Faith and Folk Traditions'. Throughout the different pieces of art, students incorporated the 7 days of creation, using stars, plants and animals to depict the formation of our world.

Years 3 and 4 produced two wall murals, 'Beautiful Creation' focuses on day and night featuring the sun, moon and stars. Students used different painting techniques and instruments to create textural effects. The mural also features clay relief tiles, the students modelled different animals, insects and birds and these were finished with acrylic paint to accentuate the details.

'Seven Days', the second mural, mimicked the textile work of Jacqui Parkinson. Seven mixed-media panels were designed to illustrate the seven days of creation. They panels represent: the separation of light from darkness, the division of water from the sky, the illumination of the sky with the sun, moon and stars, the creation of the sea and the fruitful earth, the population of the sea and sky and the creation of the animal kingdom.

Year 5 had the theme of 'How the Animals Became'. They produced mixed compositions inspired by the Aboriginal Dreamtime and Creation. After selecting an indigenous animal as the focal point of their design, students embedded symbolism of traditional aboriginal imagery and explored the stylistic aspects of aboriginal dot paintings. Each composition depicts the story of their chosen animal, using colour pencil, oil pastel and paint. They also modelled lizards in clay, finished with impressed surface decoration.

Year 6 students either worked on 'Eden Re-imagined' or 'In the Beginning'. Students working on 'Eden Re-imagined' worked with Miss Mott in the sculpture studio to create circular compositions inspired by the Christian creation story. Using the sgraffito effect, students worked details into the surface, scratching away the thin layer of coloured clay to reveal the darker base. The clay rounds feature a variety of creatures from the animal kingdom, and the beautiful bounty of the Garden of Eden.

Meanwhile Mr Webber led the students working on 'In the Beginning', silk paintings to represent their own creation stories, considering different religions and recognising the similarities between creation stories. Students planned their piece adding the sun, stars, clouds and animals and then used Gutta to mark the outlines of their composition. Once the Gutta was dry, students filled the outlines using silk paint - creating vibrant and colourful paintings.
