This week was Refugee Awareness Week and the students have been involved in activities across all subjects; from producing posters and magazines in Business and English, to baking biscuits from Syria, Ukraine and Iran in Food Technology - all with the goal of raising awareness of the plight of refugees. Furthermore, Years 7 and 8 held a Talent Show which raised money for United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

One of the highlights of the week has been our refugee art installation. Every student and a large number of staff have had the chance to sculpt a refugee figure from clay, inspired by the work of artist Antony Gormley. The figurines are all unique and depict what it might be like to be a refugee; many carrying luggage or babies. They have been displayed in a line to give the sense that they are on a journey.

Today, Pre-Prep students have sculpted clay dogs and suitcases to accompany the figures, adding an additional sense of poignance and realism to what is already a very moving piece of collective artwork.

Parents will have the chance to add their own clay refugee to the community at our Art, Textiles and Design Exhibition taking place next Thursday.
