We are thrilled to announce that Pipers has become the first UK school to win two prestigious environmental awards, The Green Apple Award and the Green World Ambassador Award for recognising and promoting environmental best practice.

Students at Pipers have always been environmentally aware, however in recent years they have focused on being a force for good, raising awareness at Pipers as well as within the local community.

With the climate crisis of huge importance, we enlisted the help of Phil Williams (former BBC Education television presenter, The Green Organisation International Sustainability Ambassador with 25 years experience working in sustainability in education) who has guided the students and staff to be more environmentally efficient and incorporate good environmental practice into everyday life. We are proud to be the first school in the country to employ an Environmentalist-in-residence.

Taking on a lead role in the environmental quest, the students created extracurricular club HOPE (Helping Others Protect the Environment) in 2019 to help channel the students’ interest in creating a more sustainable future. The ethos is the education of all members of the School community of the importance of protecting the planet, not only for ourselves but for generations to come. You can learn more about HOPE here.

Following a Green Apple application put together by the students, Pipers will be present at the Houses of Parliament in November 2022 to be given the awards and now stand alongside many reputable companies including past winners Rolls Royce, DPD and Aviva. The project in detail will also be featured in The Green Book, a publication circulated nationally and globally. In 2023, Pipers have been invited to the USA to represent the first UK school in the Green World Awards.

I am thrilled that the students' commitment to sustainability has been rewarded in such a significant way. I am proud of the work they are doing, as protecting our planet is at the heart of a Pipers education.
