On the evening of Tuesday 4 December, Pipers Corner hosted Round 1 of the prestigious English Speaking Union School’s Debating Competition.  This is a national, then an international competition, and we are thrilled that Sixth Formers, Brooklyn and Annabel were one of the two teams chosen to go through to the Regional Round.

The other schools competing were John Hampden Grammar School, Dr Challoner’s Grammar School and Dr Challoner’s High School. The adjudicators, including a solicitor and barrister and a Council leader, were impressed by the girls’ confidence as they opposed the Motion This House regrets hosting the Olympics, their speaking without reference to notes, their seeking debate and clash, and particularly their ability to turn the Proposition’s challenges back around against them, all without ever losing the smile or the fluency – the iron fist in the velvet glove.

This is the second successive year Pipers Corner has gone through to the Regional Round, testament to the ever improving standard and to the ever increasing value the girls are placing on debating.
