Students at Pipers Corner had the opportunity of hearing how the charity “WheelPower” transforms lives through sport when Chris Rattenbury one of their Ambassadors came into assembly on Friday to talk to the girls.

Chris explained how the Paralympics were the idea of Sir Ludwig Guttmann a pioneering neurosurgeon who revolutionised treatment for patients with spinal injuries and who organised the “Stoke Mandeville Games” in 1944, the inaugural games of the modern Paralympics.

He also shared some personal anecdotes from his own life about how “WheelPower” had facilitated him trying wheelchair rugby and basketball before settling on weight lifting as his chosen sport.

Finally Mrs Martin-Löf and Mrs Hide from the PPTA presented Chris with a cheque for £3750 which was raised through an auction and a raffle at last year’s PTA Ball.
