On Saturday 20 September two Pipers girls, Ruby B and Emily H (Year 9) participated in a Royal Institution Maths Masterclass, held at Wycombe High School.

As part of the workshop the girls enjoyed a lecture, given by a structural engineer, following which they were split into groups of six and challenged to make their very own bridge to span a 50cm gap. The only materials available to them were paper, Sellotape and string.

This was the first in a series of masterclasses that the girls will be attending. The Royal Institution co-ordinates a UK-wide network of mathematics masterclasses and related enrichment activities. There are over 60 secondary masterclass series and related events, stretching from Aberdeen to Cornwall, reaching over 3000 students annually. The masterclasses are designed to encourage, inspire and engage young people in the art and practice of mathematics. The workshops introduce students to aspects of maths which may not usually be covered in the school curriculum and we look forward to hearing what the girls do next.
