Year 12 AS Level Psychology students have just begun learning the topic of Memory – investigating what it is and how it works. Over the years Psychologists have proposed different models of memory to represent the individual components of its structure. Each component holds different key functions that aid with our cognitive processing on a daily basis.

They girls took a creative approach to their explorations, working on the basis that a theoretical concept can be portrayed and understood much better when it is represented using tangible and visual methods.

They each were tasked with creating a 3D model of one of two concepts. The first was the Multi-Store Model (Atkinson & Shiffrin) in which it is proposed that memory consists of three stores: a sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). The second option was the Working Memory Model (Baddeley & Hitch) which proposes an alternative model of short-term memory.

A range of brilliantly thought out ideas were produced including models made out of cake, wire and chocolate wrappers. The initiative has really helped the girls to gain a deeper understanding of this complex area of Psychology.
