On Tuesday evening, as a Prep Captain’s Challenge, Year 6 girls at Pipers Corner took on the task of hosting a hugely entertaining quiz night and auction for their parents in school’s Arts Centre Café.

The purpose of the evening was to raise money for the girls’ chosen charity, Rays of Sunshine, a children's charity which brightens up the lives of seriously ill children aged three to 18 by granting wishes and organising large scale events.

The girls planned the whole event themselves, from coming up with the quiz questions, to making some delicious canapés and decorating the Café. They also approached a range of local businesses asking them to donate small items which they could auction.

The girls themed the event on four parts of the world – Germany, South Africa, India and Australia/New Zealand. There was a quiz round for each, with food made by the girls served in-between rounds that reflected the country in question. Items that guests were invited to sample included: ham and sauerkraut roll ups from Germany, sweet potato and cumin mini scones from South Africa, onion bhajis from India and lamingtons from Australia. In addition to the quiz there was also a “Guess the flag” round and a challenge to create an item of craft from materials provided to the teams.

Following the Quiz it was time for the girls’ auction during which they demonstrated some excellent auctioneering skills encouraging those present to bid for a range of interesting lots.

There was no charge for the event, instead guests were asked to make donations in recognition of what they believed the price should be. By the end of the night the girls had managed to raise an amazing £1500 from collection bucket contributions and the auction.

Deputy Head of Prep, Miss Eagles, who supported the girls to organise the event said, “I am so proud of the girls and all the effort they have put in to organising tonight’s event. They showed huge amounts of teamwork and their attention to detail was superb. We are delighted to be supporting Rays of Sunshine and I am sure that the money the girls have raised will be most gratefully received.”
