Hispanic Festival Day

A first at Pipers Corner, Year 9 girls delved into the delights of Día de los Muertos with students from the Royal Grammar School as part of Hispanic Festival Day.

Participants took part in creative workshops to embed their understanding of this UNESCO protected Hispanic festivity. From an academic perspective the language and the cultural understanding around this internationally recognised celebration is vitally important to students currently studying Spanish GCSE.

In the morning, Year 10 girls performed sections of the film ‘Coco’ in the Arts Centre and presented Pipers’ own altar, in keeping with this element of Aztec and Mexican culture. Year 9 students worked together on a running dictation task, and then created storyboards ably manipulating the Spanish language. They also designed their own calavera masks and put on a desfile (parade) of authentic costumes. Everyone had the opportunity to taste many of the typical Mexican dishes such as: Champurrado, Pan de Muerto and Chalupas. Then, in the afternoon, the boys and girls took part in a workshop centred around the Spanish film ‘Coco’ to further embed their learnings.

A magical day that brought together two schools through their love of all things Spanish and the beginning of a new tradition here at Pipers Corner.
