Year 11 student Rohanna M helped her family bake more than 70 scones on VE Day (8 May 2020) to deliver to residents in their village aged 75 years and over.

As many of us celebrated VE Day up and down the country, we were touched to hear about one of our student’s brilliant efforts. Rohanna M (Year 11), joined by her sister Isla, helped bake more than 70 scones which were individually boxed up and delivered to those in their village aged 75 years and over.

The family’s local church in Speen were also on board with the initiative and a small army helped deliver the scones to delighted recipients. The family received many words of thanks but one resident in particular wrote a very touching letter to Rohanna and her family, as follows:

“A splendid nostalgic day! I was born and brought up in Surrey, near Reigate. I am just old enough to have some memories of the back end of WW2 – the air-raid shelter in our kitchen and the air-raid sirens; the terrible bomb damage in London’s East End where my mother’s parents lived; the doodlebugs and V2 rockets landing not far away; evacuated by train to Yorkshire for several months; Ration Books; the masses of bomber aircraft and trucks full of troops passing over and through our town on D-Day. And at the end of the war my parents taking us to see the celebrations in London and the King’s and Churchill’s speeches. And later being able to buy sweets again!

“The Queen’s speech and your beautiful box of lovely scones brought it all back. We are very impressed by the thought and care put into the box. Our grateful appreciation and many thanks to you and all your team.”

Many of our students and staff enjoyed VE Day celebrations. We were thrilled to see lots of homemade bunting, some of which can be seen in the video below.
