Lower Sixth History students visited Windsor Castle on Thursday to take part in a workshop in order to deepen their understanding of the Tudors for their A Level History course.  The dedicated A Level workshop is a new development from Windsor Castle and the Pipers girls were the first group to have the opportunity to participate.

For their “Tudor Britain” unit the girls in Lower Sixth have been learning about the consolidation of the Tudor dynasty, from the accession to the throne by Henry VII following the Battle of Bosworth, through to the reign of Henry VIII.  Their studies include a range of aspects of the period including religion, literature, art and culture.

During their visit the girls took particular note of the Tudor portraits, which are part of the nation’s largest collection, costumes such as Henry VIII’s armour and the architecture of parts of the castle which were built during the reigns of Henry VII, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.  The girls were particularly interested in these areas in terms of how they were used as a form of propaganda during this period of British History and the impact this had on society.

Head of History, Mrs Tinnelly said “The trip to Windsor Castle has definitely enhanced the girls learning of Tudor Britain. Working closely with the Learning Officer at the Castle helped them to engage with significant historical artefacts and the chance to analyse them up close was really fantastic.”
