This week girls studying A Level History had the opportunity to take part in The Historical Association’s Great Debate.

Every two years the Association organises a special debate for 16 – 19 year olds. The event is a great way for the students involved to improve their public speaking skills, enabling them to gain confidence and self-esteem.

This year the debate’s question was “How did the First World War affect me and my community?”. Students could choose to talk about anything to do with the First World War and explain how and why it had made an impact on their personal lives or their local, social, cultural or religious community. They had a maximum of five minutes to present their case and answer questions from the judges.

Bethan T (Upper Sixth) was chosen as Pipers’ representative in the debate and she spoke about her research into Wethered's Brewery in Marlow, focusing on the role of women who ended up working there in large numbers during the war.

The school is pleased to announce that Bethan was the winner of the Oxford heat and will participate in the National Grand Final at the Imperial War Museum, London in March.
