Events and Trips Pre-Prep and Prep

In December, girls studying A Level History took a trip to London to visit the Houses of Parliament. The purpose of the trip was to aid the girls’ understanding of the parliamentary process.

This is a vital area of learning for our A Level students, as they study the development of Parliament in their British History module and investigate the impact of protest and pressure groups for their coursework in the Upper Sixth.

On arrival at the Palace of Westminster the group had a tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The girls also participated in a “People’s Parliament” workshop session which considered parliamentary pressure groups and how they impact on the Government. After the workshop the girls met members of Aylesbury MP David Lidington’s office, where they discussed the role of an MP and the current events in American politics.

Bethan T (Upper Sixth) said “The trip to the Houses of Parliament was a fantastic way to see first-hand what happens in Government. Prior to the trip, my knowledge of how Parliament operates was limited but the trip helped me further understand the structure whilst highlighting the traditions and practices within both Houses. The highlight of the trip was being able to watch a live debate in the House of Commons.”

Whilst in London the girls also found time to pay a visit to the National Portrait Gallery to view the Medieval and Tudor portraits on display. It was really interesting for the group to see how art developed through the period and appreciate how portrait paintings were used for political propaganda.
