This Term saw girls in Year 10 participate in a five day residential trip to the Margam Discovery Centre in South Wales in order to complete a piece of river coursework for their Geography GCSE. The centre, set in 850 acres of beautiful parkland, offers high quality environmental education to all age groups, both residentially and for day visits.

The girls arrived at the centre on a Saturday afternoon and went straight into their lessons with the centre’s tutor. After their first lesson the girls headed to the Nant Philip River to carry out pilot river studies of the area using a variety of methods to collect data. After dinner the girls completed follow up tasks and prepared for the data collection section of their coursework.

The following day the girls headed to the source of the River Ogmore. Despite some heavy rain, the girls’ spirits were not dampened and they covered six sites during the course of the day, with each girl taking an active part within their teams in collecting the data. Back at the centre the girls took time in pulling their data together, looked at secondary sources and began to write up their results. The girls demonstrated that they were able to produce great work within a set time frame which was excellent.

Mrs Collins, Head of Geography, said “It was really encouraging to see how well the girls all worked together in their teams and certainly a large number of girls showed considerable leadership potential in this situation. Despite the very intensive workload during the trip, the girls all enjoyed the experience and are very pleased with the coursework pieces they produced.”
