This week saw the culmination of two years of hard work for our A Level Drama and Theatre Studies students as they performed their examination pieces to an external examiner.

For their A2 practical examination the girls were tasked with devising a piece of original theatre, in a chosen theatrical style which must be clearly evidenced in the performance. For their piece, entitled “Who owns the child?” the group made the decision to perform in epic style.

Through their performance the girls explored the story of Ashya King, the small boy whose parents took him from the hospital as they felt there was better treatment elsewhere. They considered the many different perspectives and questions arising from the case such as: “Should the child be taken away from the mother?”, “Should the Media be allowed to manipulate the truth?”, “Should the doctor’s profession dictate his ethical beliefs?”, “Should the law always be accepted?” and “Should the public have a right to know the truth?” In their dialogue the girls used direct quotes from newspapers, regarding the case, along with quotes from the mother and doctors involved.

The girls acted the sequences with confidence and to dramatic effect. Each scene was preceded by questions to which the audience had to make up their own mind as to who right and who was wrong - a conclusion which seemed difficult to reach.

Mrs Coe, Acting Director of Drama said, “The A2 Drama girls’ creative ideas have been outstanding this year. They have explored a very tough topic and managed to pull everyone’s different opinions together for an amazing piece of original theatre. The content was impressive and so was their delivery.”
