During the last week of the Spring Term the four Houses at Pipers came together to compete in the Inter-House Performing Arts Festival. With this year’s theme being the “Sixties” each House presented a group song, drama and dance piece, as well as a solo performance.

First up was Penn House whose performances included the 1963 speech by Martin Luther King “I have a dream”, a solo flute performance from Amber C, “California Dreaming” by a group of singers, accompanied by dancers and finally a full House rendition of “Respect” by Aretha Franklin.

Then it was the turn of Mandeville House who started with a great dance performance of the songs from “Hairspray” which then transitioned into their solo piece by Georgia C singing “Good Morning Baltimore”. For their dramatic piece the House recited “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel, then the full House sang “California Dreaming” with lovely harmonies throughout, while finishing their entry with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

Hampden were next with a slightly more serious take on the afternoon’s festivities, explaining exactly why the “Sixties” was important for civil rights. They started their entry with a drama piece entitled “Let it be”. Other performances included “Stand by me” by Ben E. King and a solo violin piece of “From Russia with Love” to highlight the cold war. To end their entry Hampden got together to sing “Respect” by Aretha Franklin.

Last by not least was Milton House. Milton started with a lovely sixties folk medley, identifying the upbeat nature of the decade with songs including “My girl”, “Sunshine on a cloudy day” and “Blackbird”. They also performed the Martin Luther King “I have a dream” speech and the House sang “Respect”. For their solo and dance performance they chose “As long as he needs me” from Oliver, which represented the many musical theatre productions emerging from the sixties.

At the end of the festival Hampden House were crowned this year’s winners, having impressed the judge, Ms Julie Gossage, with their great passion and beautiful pieces and showing great energy and commitment to their performances.

Ms Julie Gossage, singing teacher at judge said “Well done to all girls who took part. They really did impress with their dedication and commitment to all areas of performing arts. Each House brought something different to their performances, even when they were re-telling the same story. They really showcased their talents to the whole school and it was a pleasure to watch and judge this year’s competition.”
