Nepal Awareness Day

After hearing the devastating news that Nepal had been hit with by an earthquake, the Geography Department held a Nepal awareness day to raise money for the earthquake appeal. They also took the opportunity to help the girls to learn more about the area, the effects of earthquakes and how we can help with the aftermath.

A number of events were held to raise money, including a mufti day and cake sale, which along with general donations, enabled the school to make a £1200 donation to the charity appeal. The girls are very pleased and proud to donate such an amazing sum of money to help those in Nepal.

To raise awareness about Nepal girls took part in a quiz to answer questions and learn more about the area and earthquakes. They also discussed the crises and country in Form Time and within lessons. Geography students also created displays including information about Nepal, news coverage of the recent events and also about how earthquakes happen. 

The Department is also in touch with an ex-Head Girl of Pipers, Kala Gurung, who left school in 1990, and lives in Nepal. This has proved to be a successful partnership for the girls as they have been able to see exactly what has been happening in the country and shared with Kala what they had been doing at School to help. Kala has said that she is thankful for all the work that Pipers is doing to help raise awareness and support the earthquake appeal. 

Mrs Collins, Head of Geography said “The day was very successful and has allowed time for girls to reflect on recent events and show support to fellow Pipers girls in Nepal. In light of the recent second earthquake it is even more important that donations continue and Nepal gets the support it needs to rebuild."
