Whole School Pre-Prep and Prep

We had some surprise treats in our lunch yesterday! For their first food demonstration of this academic year, our School Caterers, Holroyd Howe, treated us to a "Bush Tucker Trial".

It certainly gave us some "food for thought" as we enjoyed flapjacks with mixed critters, chocolate mousse with black ants, brownies with Mexican crickets and silkworm pupae couscous!

There are many health benefits from eating insects. For example:

  • Crickets contain as much calcium as milk, as well as three times more iron than is found in black beans.
  • Caterpillars can provide us with 100% of the copper and zinc required per day.
  • Insects are low in carbohydrates, a good source of fibre and high in protein - up to 81% protein when dried.

The girls had great fun tasting the treats (some more than others!) but all reactions from those who tried were very positive with many girls coming back for more!
