Whole School Pre-Prep and Prep

Year 9 students from Pipers Corner had an opportunity to learn all about the diverse nature of jobs available in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) sector when they attended an event hosted by GE Healthcare.

GE Healthcare is a leading provider of medical imaging, monitoring, biomanufacturing, and cell and gene therapy technologies. Their aim is to enable precision health in diagnostics, therapeutics and monitoring through intelligent devices, data analytics, applications and services.

During the afternoon, in conjunction with pupils from Chesham Grammar School, the Pipers Corner students were tasked with considering the action that would be required in the event of an outbreak of disease. The task was split into three stages:

  • Registration
  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment

The group had to work out a strategy for best dealing with the influx of patients using designated doctor/nurse numbers and timings. Once this had been done then they could invent a piece of theoretical machinery to speed up the process to improve overall survival rates. Some ideas that the groups came up with included finger print scanners and auto-diagnosis machines.

The activity was a fantastic way for the girls to learn more about STEM and how people in various roles can come together in a crisis to find solutions.
